Mount Washington

Mt. Washington rises to 6,288 feet above sea level; modest by comparison to the larger ranges in the world, is one of the best winter training grounds in North America. A winter ascent of Mt. Washington stands on its own as a worthy goal. Beyond the summit unfolds layers of adventure to train and test your self with. Notorious for harsh weather and record winds Mt. Washington and the Presidential Range are the best destination in the Northeast for big mountain experience.

Huntington Ravine is one of the Northeast’s greatest winter alpine playgrounds with Pinnacle Gully and Pinnacle Buttress as two stand-out classic’s. On the North side of the Ravine Yale, Damnation, and North Gully offer ideal entry level alpine climbs with bulges of ice and snow climbing with opportunities for rock gear. The ultimate is the North to South link up. Eight gullies in and day!

Tuckerman’s Ravine is the ideal early season fix. Before the snow is scoured from the Alpine Gardens and deposited into the bowl of Tuckerman’s Ravine the ice climbing is extensive. As the season matures the climbs become quality snow climbs more directly ascending to the summit.

The Presidential Range Traverse (aka presi-traverse) is one of the best winter mountaineering objectives in the Northeast. The Presidential Traverse starts on the North end with Mt. Madison 5,363ft and traverses over Mt. Adams 5,798ft, Mt. Jefferson 5,715ft, Mt. Clay 5,512ft, Mt. Washington 6,288ft, Mt. Monroe 5,385ft, Mt. Franklin 5,001ft, Mt. Eisenhower 4,714ft, Mt. Pierce 4,312ft and finishing down the Crawford Path to Crawford Notch. The presi-traverse is often done in three days however with the right conditions a two-day traverse is a great challenge. Another variation is the Northern Presi-Traverse. A two-day Northern traverse is a great winter mountaineering challenge.
